RIOT/CIVIL COMMOTION ADVICE

We’re all saddened and appalled by the riots across the UK and many Client’s have already approached us for advice on what to do is their property is damaged as a result.

Whilst we can make some generalist comments they are precisely that given the wide range of Insurers and policy wordings and the only by speaking to us can we tailor our comments to your own circumstances and the insurance cover you have.

First and foremost, what to do in the event you fall victim to damage as a result of civil disobedience is, as soon as possible and certainly within 7 days…

  1. Report to the police and obtain a crime reference number.
  1. Notify us on 0151 336 5881, Extension 6 for Claims .

There will be a policy condition and you would be expected to

  • take and act upon whatever police might be given relating to any incidents/expected incidents in your area.
  • take all other reasonable care to protect the property and, where relevant, both staff and public including closing the premises altogether.

In general terms, we would expect most insurance policies covering properties (unless unoccupied or where specifically excluded) to provide cover for loss or damage as a result of riot/civil commotion.

If not classified as such by the relevant authority, we would still normally expect (again unless unoccupied or specifically excluded) cover for Fire, Theft or Malicious Damage to come into play.

Where a commercial premises and Business Interruption/Loss of Profits cover is given, this would normally provide this cover against any/all of the perils stated above.

In the case of domestic premises, we would normally expect to see the cost of necessary alternative accommodation for a period included.

Please Note: This is generic advice only and nothing can be taken as advice relating to your specific circumstances or confirmation of cover.

If you wish to discuss your particular insurance cover please call us on 0151 336 5881.
